Contrary to conventional dramatic wisdom, David Lynch was reluctant to ever reveal Laura Palmer's murderer. He regarded the ongoing investigation into her death as an infinite continuum of mystery. Network execs at ABC felt differently and so Lynch was forced to solve the crime.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly he likened this resolution to killing the goose that laid the golden egg, and he no doubt has a point. Viewers tuned out of Twin Peaks in droves, Lynch lost interest and it was widely perceived that from that point on the quality of the show declined. HOWEVER, the fans still clung to the series, right 'til the bitter end, resisting the urge to ditch it for the other favourite show of the day, Cheers.
