The fight to keep Australian faces and voices on our screens is nothing new. Since the earliest days of our screen history, Australia's local industry has been threatened with destruction by a tsunami of cheaper, and mostly American, films and TV programs.

Given the choice of investing in a local production that may or may not find a local audience vs the cheaper and less risky option of purchasing the broadcast rights to a tried and tested US drama, Australian networks tend to veer towards option two.

So far no surprises, so what's the problem?

When Ten axed music clip show Video Hits last year after 24 years, it became the latest casualty of viewer fragmentation. TV stations have entire departments dedicated to the production of "promos" - short, promotional ads designed to hook viewers in to watch that channel's programs. At their best, they have the power to seduce an audience and create a sense of buzz around a program. Sadly however, what is more often the case, promos blather on with a formulaic wall of voice over and graphics, failing to communicate anything to the potential audience, and perhaps even turning viewers off.

So which promos did we like this year, and which ones got our goat? Andrew talks with The Gruen Transfer's Jane Caro and voice over artist and actor, Troy Planet

Brit hit Shameless is a recent example of a series that's gone under the knife for the sake of a US audience. The death of Kerry Packer in 2006 unleashed an outpouring of nostalgia for a man few in the biz would have regarded as a friend. It also prompted predictions of the end of Australian network television, imagining perhaps it would just curl up and die from the grief. Sure, it was a shake up but in many ways Packer's death was irrelevant to a beast that had already evolved into something way beyond him.
