The Gruen Transfer, you're soaking in it

The Gruen Transfer - an unusual name for a TV show, yes, but these three words actually refer to the moment when a consumer surrenders to the intentional disorientation of a shopping centre, and gives over to the temptations of impulse shopping.

So can we apply this process then to TV viewing? Isn't channel surfing pretty much the same as window shopping? How do the channels lure us into their shop - and then what?

Andrew talks with Gruen types, Jane Caro and Jon Casimir about what works for them, and what doesn't.

7Mate and GEM: one for the boys and one for the girls

Hands up if you upgraded to high definition in anticipation of a plethora of high quality programming being pushed down the tube to your lounge room screen?

Well it seems that the novelty has worn off for some of the free to air networks, with HD signals being abandoned in favour of general entertainment channels. Seven's gone all blokey with 7Mate, and Nine's chasing grocery buyers with the female skewed GEM. And while we're looking forward to catching Laura Linney in The Big C on GEM, we're not sure who decided that re-runs of Wagon Train (1957) in black and white on 7Mate were an innovative use of modern broadcast technologies.

Who better to call on to discuss these two new channels, than Australia's first female PM, Ms. Julia Gillard, and top bloke, Pete Timbs (TV Week).
