Happy birthday Corrie

Back on Friday 9th December, 1960 when Coronation Street first went to air who could have predicted how much a part of people's lives it would become? One critic at the time decreed that it was doomed and would only last three weeks.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this week, Coronation Street has gone on to become the longest running British soap. And despite British tabloid, The Sun declaring that one thousand elderly Coronation Street viewers are dying in Britain each week, it is still consistently one of that nation's highest rating programmes.

On the occasion of its semicentenary Andrew talks with dyed in the wool Corrie fans, Jo Casamento (The Sun Herald) and Michael Fabits about why they love the old girl so much.

It's a Wrap for UK Crime Dramas

With a number of long running UK crime dramas shutting up shop, we're wondering who'll be left to deal with all those quirky British crimes? It seems UK broadcasters have had to make some cruel cuts to their production budgets, blaming the recession. And polls have revealed that shows such as A Touch of Frost and Heartbeat have lost their relevance to contemporary audiences. Even The Bill's been axed, despite a recent revamp and 27 years of service.

Michael Peschardt (BBC World) and Richard Clune (The Sunday Telegraph) join Andrew for a post mortem discussion.
